Tokashiki Island Travel Tips

2 of 2 in Kerama Islands

Tokashiki Island (渡嘉敷島, Tokashiki-jima), the largest of the Kerama Islands, is a dazzling destination that perfectly blends lush nature with outdoor adventure. While it may be less visited than its neighbor Zamami, Tokashiki captivates travelers with its pristine beaches, framed by rolling, forested hills and dramatic coastal cliffs. Hiking trails wind through the island’s dense greenery, leading to scenic observation decks that offer panoramic views of the turquoise sea and neighboring isles. Whether you’re exploring on foot or relaxing by the shore, Tokashiki provides a refreshing connection to nature in its purest form.

The best time to enjoy Tokashiki’s crystal-clear waters is from May to October, when warm weather draws sunseekers and ocean lovers to its western beaches. Popular spots like Aharen Beach and Tokashiku Beach are well-equipped with rental shops, marine tour operators, restrooms, and beachside cafés—ideal for a full day of swimming, snorkeling, or stand-up paddleboarding. For those seeking solitude, hidden coves and quieter stretches of sand lie just off the beaten path, perfect for reading, relaxing, or spotting sea turtles in the shallows. Whether you're chasing adventure or longing for a peaceful retreat, Tokashiki Island delivers a quintessential Okinawan island escape.

Getting around

Tokashiki Island is approximately nine kilometers long and three kilometers wide, with two main villages: Tokashiki in the northeast and Aharen in the southwest.

A local bus runs infrequently between the two villages, taking about 15 minutes and costing 400 yen. Departures are generally timed to match the ferry schedule. Alternatively, many accommodations and tour companies offer pickup services. You can also rent a car, moped, or bicycle at Tokashiki Port. For those who enjoy walking, the journey between the villages takes about 60 to 80 minutes on foot—though the terrain is hilly.
