Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine
Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine (白谷雲水峡, Shiratani Unsuikyō) is a verdant nature park on Yakushima Island celebrated for its ancient cedar forests and enchanting moss-covered scenery. Just a 15-minute drive from Miyanoura, it’s one of the most accessible gateways into Yakushima’s wild beauty. Towering cedar trees like Nidaiosugi and Kugurisugi line the trails, offering awe-inspiring encounters with trees that are centuries old. The park features a range of well-marked trails, from gentle walks of under an hour to more challenging hikes lasting up to five hours. Visitors can enjoy peaceful strolls along stone and wooden paths or follow the historic Edo-period footpath that winds gracefully through the forest. English signage makes the area welcoming and navigable for international guests.
Beyond its natural appeal, Shiratani Unsuikyo is also a place of cultural inspiration—it famously influenced the mystical forest scenes in Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke. A secluded grove near the Tsuji-toge Pass is said to have directly inspired the film’s lush, otherworldly atmosphere. For adventurous hikers, the ravine also connects to the trail leading to Jomonsugi, though the full round trip takes about twelve hours and is considerably tougher than the more commonly used Arakawa Trail. Whether you're in search of cinematic magic, natural wonder, or a serene forest escape, Shiratani Unsuikyo offers a truly unforgettable Yakushima experience.
