Berrick Hall
Berrick Hall (ベーリック・ホール), the largest Western-style residence in the Yamate district, was completed in 1930. Designed by American architect J.H. Morgan, who also worked on the nearby Yamate No. 111, the house was commissioned by British trader B.R. Berrick. The architectural style of Berrick Hall is a unique fusion of Spanish and Western influences, creating a striking and distinctive presence in the area. The residence’s grand design reflects the affluent lifestyle of its original owner and the influence of Western culture in Yokohama during the early 20th century.
Visitors to Berrick Hall can admire the impressive facade and explore the elegantly furnished rooms that transport them back to a bygone era. The interior showcases a rich blend of Western design elements and historical details, offering a glimpse into the life of the expatriates who once lived there. Berrick Hall serves as a valuable window into Yokohama’s foreign history, particularly its trade relations and cultural exchanges during the period when foreign nationals played a significant role in shaping the city’s development.
