Hakone Detached Palace (Kohantenbokan)
Hakone Detached Palace (旧箱根離宮, Kyū Hakone Rikyū) was once a summer residence of the Japanese Imperial Family and now welcomes visitors as part of Onshi Hakone Park. Nestled on the southern shores of Lake Ashinoko, between Moto-Hakone and Hakone-machi, the site offers a tranquil setting with sweeping views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Although the original palace was largely dismantled after World War II, a small and modest structure remains as a historical marker of the former retreat.
The true highlight, however, is the beautifully maintained Onshi Hakone Park, which surrounds the former palace grounds. Visitors can enjoy scenic walking trails, open lawns, and panoramic vistas—particularly breathtaking on clear days when Mount Fuji comes into view. Early mornings and the cooler months offer the best chances for unobstructed sights. With its peaceful atmosphere, rich history, and stunning natural scenery, the area is a rewarding stop for travelers exploring the Hakone region.
