Isuien Garden

12 of 15 in Nara

Isuien Garden (Isuien, 依水園) in Nara is a peaceful oasis that combines natural elegance with deep historical roots. Its name, meaning "garden founded on water," refers to its scenic ponds fed by the Yoshikigawa River. A standout feature is the use of borrowed scenery—cleverly framing views of Todaiji Temple’s Nandaimon Gate and Mount Wakakusayama as part of the landscape, creating a seamless harmony between garden and surroundings.

The grounds are divided into two parts: a charming front garden from the 17th century and a more expansive rear garden completed in 1899 by a wealthy merchant. Visitors can stroll along winding paths lined with seasonal blooms and traditional tea houses. Next to the garden is a small museum included in the admission, showcasing rare artifacts from ancient China and Korea, such as pottery, mirrors, and seals—collected by the family that still cares for the garden today.
