Wakakusayama

14 of 15 in Nara

Mount Wakakusayama (若草山) rises behind Nara Park, nestled between Todaiji Temple and Kasuga Shrine. This 350-meter grassy hill rewards hikers with sweeping views over Nara City. The mountain is open to visitors for most of the year, with a small entrance fee. In spring, cherry blossoms dot the slopes, turning the landscape into a sea of pink.

A short 15–20 minute hike leads to a scenic plateau, perfect for taking in the surroundings. Those looking for more can reach the summit with an additional 20–30 minute walk. Every January, the mountain becomes the centerpiece of the Wakakusa Yamayaki festival, when its slopes are dramatically set ablaze—a centuries-old tradition that lights up the Nara night sky.
