Ueno Tenjin Festival
The Ueno Tenjin Festival (上野天神祭), held annually from October 20 to 22 at Sugawara Shrine, is a vibrant celebration marking the arrival of autumn. The festival’s highlight takes place on October 21, when nine massive danjiri (festival floats) parade through the streets, each adorned with intricate decorations. These elaborate floats are pulled through the town by enthusiastic crowds, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of drums and flutes played by musicians on board the floats. The festival’s lively atmosphere is further amplified by a unique procession featuring over a hundred ogres (oni), with one of the main attractions being the "hyorotsuki oni"—a staggering ogre that delights the crowd and often elicits startled reactions from children, adding an element of both humor and surprise.
In addition to the daytime festivities, the Yoimiya event, held on the evening of October 24, transforms the floats into a magical sight as they are illuminated with vibrant paper lanterns. This breathtaking spectacle sets the stage for the full festival, which is recognized as a National Important Intangible Folk-Cultural Property. With its combination of traditional music, folklore, and stunningly decorated floats, the Ueno Tenjin Festival offers a rare opportunity to experience the rich cultural heritage of the region in a lively, immersive setting.
