Danjiri Museum

6 of 7 in Iga Ueno

The Danjiri Museum (だんじり会館, Danjiri Kaikan) in Iga Ueno is a vibrant celebration of the famous Ueno Tenjin Festival, held every year from October 23 to 25. The museum immerses visitors in the festival's lively atmosphere with a striking display of three enormous danjiri (festival floats), housed in a massive round glass case. Life-sized figures, dressed in traditional attire, bring the excitement of the festival to life. Large screens also showcase a short film, offering insights into both the cultural significance of the festival and the natural beauty of the Iga Ueno region, enriching the experience for all visitors.

In the museum’s second exhibition room, the Oni-gyoretsu procession comes to life through detailed displays of oni (demon) figures, showcasing the colorful and dramatic street parade that is a hallmark of the festival. The exhibition features intricate masks, displaying the varied expressions of the demons, who interact with the crowd during the festival’s festivities. Additionally, the museum offers an interactive experience where visitors can rent ninja costumes for a small fee, which is especially popular with children. Available from 10:00 to 15:00, the costume rental allows tourists to stroll around town or snap memorable photos in their ninja attire, adding an extra layer of fun and engagement to their visit.
