Uji River

3 of 16 in Uji

The Uji River (宇治川, Ujigawa) gracefully flows through the center of Uji, dividing the town into northern and southern districts while creating a beautiful landscape of calm waters, forested hills, and historical landmarks. The iconic Uji Bridge (Uji-bashi), one of Japan’s oldest and most famous bridges, has stood here for centuries and features prominently in The Tale of Genji. Along the riverbanks, visitors can enjoy leisurely walks beneath rows of cherry blossoms in spring, while traditional teahouses and restaurants serve locally grown Uji matcha, sencha, and a variety of tea-flavored sweets. From July to September, the ancient tradition of cormorant fishing (ukai) is performed on summer nights, where trained birds catch fish by lamplight, recreating a spectacle that has captivated audiences for centuries. Sightseeing boats also offer short cruises along the river, providing scenic views of the surrounding temples and mountains.

Several pedestrian bridges connect the riverbanks to Tachibana Island (Tachibanajima), a small, tranquil islet with shaded benches, a stone pagoda, and scenic viewpoints — a perfect spot for picnics or quiet reflection. Just steps away, visitors can explore Byodoin Temple with its iconic Phoenix Hall, or stroll to Ujigami Shrine and Uji Shrine, both deeply connected to Uji’s spiritual and literary heritage. For fans of classical Japanese literature, The Tale of Genji Museum offers interactive exhibits and dioramas that bring the world of the Heian-period novel to life. The riverside area blends natural beauty, cultural depth, and literary history, making it one of Uji’s most enchanting and rewarding destinations.
