Nanzenji is a 5–10 minute walk from Keage Station on the Tozai Subway Line (about 20 minutes and 260 yen from Kyoto Station), or from the Nanzenji-Eikando-michi bus stop (about 35 minutes and 230 yen from Kyoto Station on bus number 5). It’s also a short walk from the southern end of the Philosopher's Path, with Ginkakuji Temple located at the northern end.

Nanzenji Temple
Nanzenji Temple (南禅寺), located at the base of Kyoto’s scenic Higashiyama mountains, is one of the most historically important Zen temples in Japan. Founded in the late 13th century, it originally served as the retirement villa of Emperor Kameyama before being converted into a Zen monastery. Today, Nanzenji serves as the head temple of one of the branches of the Rinzai Zen school. The sprawling temple grounds feature a variety of impressive structures and numerous subtemples, each showcasing unique architecture, tranquil gardens, and centuries of spiritual tradition.
Among Nanzenji’s many highlights is the massive Sanmon Gate, rebuilt in 1628, where visitors can climb to a balcony for sweeping views over Kyoto. The Hojo, or abbot's quarters, is famed for its rock garden symbolizing tigers crossing water, as well as beautifully preserved fusuma sliding door paintings. The picturesque Meiji-era brick aqueduct, which still carries water from Lake Biwa, adds a striking contrast to the temple’s classical aesthetic. Surrounding subtemples like Nanzenin, Konchi-in, and Tenjuan offer additional serene gardens, teahouses, and seasonal beauty, particularly captivating during Kyoto’s vibrant autumn foliage.
