Chionin Temple

65 of 75 in Kyoto

Chionin Temple (知恩院), located in Higashiyama district, serves as the head temple of the Jodo (Pure Land) sect of Japanese Buddhism and stands as a powerful symbol of religious devotion, history, and architectural grandeur. Founded in the 13th century to honor Honen, the sect's founder, Chionin played a key role in spreading Pure Land teachings, which emphasize salvation through faith in Amida Buddha and made Buddhism accessible to the common people. Visitors enter through the awe-inspiring Sanmon Gate, completed in 1621, which holds the distinction of being the largest wooden gate in Japan, standing 24 meters tall. Beyond the gate lies the expansive temple complex, with the Miedo Hall at its heart, enshrining a statue of Honen and serving as the focal point of worship.

As you wander through Chionin’s spacious grounds, historic pathways lead to several important cultural and spiritual landmarks. The Seishido Hall and Honen’s mausoleum offer deeper insight into the temple’s rich legacy, while the massive temple bell—one of the largest in Japan—echoes with ceremonial significance, especially during New Year’s celebrations. Visitors can also enjoy two beautifully landscaped gardens: the Hojo Garden, featuring classic Japanese rock arrangements and ponds, and the Yuzen Garden, known for its seasonal floral beauty. Together, these elements create an atmosphere of profound tranquility, inviting visitors to experience both the spiritual essence and historical depth of Kyoto’s Buddhist heritage.
