Jigokudani (地獄谷, or Hell Valley) is a captivating volcanic area located just above Noboribetsu Onsen, renowned for its active geothermal features. The valley is famous for its sulfurous streams, hissing steam vents, and other volcanic activities, all of which contribute to the hot spring waters that flow into Noboribetsu’s baths. Visitors can explore a variety of walking trails that wind through the lush wooded hills surrounding the valley, providing stunning views of the geothermal landscape. One of the highlights is Oyunuma, a sulfuric pond located about a 20-30 minute walk from the valley. The pond’s surface temperature reaches 50°C, making it an impressive natural feature. A smaller mud pond nearby is even hotter, adding to the area’s unique and otherworldly atmosphere.

The Oyunumagawa River flows out of Oyunuma Pond, carrying warm waters through the surrounding forest, creating a serene and exceptional natural experience. Visitors can follow the river for hundreds of meters, dipping their feet into the warm waters along the way for a relaxing natural foot bath. The area is especially popular during autumn, when the vibrant colors of the foliage create a breathtaking landscape, with peak foliage occurring in mid-October. In winter, some of the trails may be inaccessible due to snow, but the snow-covered landscape offers a peaceful and picturesque setting for those who still wish to visit.

I recently visited Jigokudani and it was an unforgettable experience! The walk from Noboribetsu Onsen was quick and easy, just a 5-minute stroll. The volcanic activity in the valley was amazing to see, with steam vents and sulfurous streams everywhere. I took a short hike up to Oyunuma Pond, which was incredible—the pond’s water was so hot, and the nearby mud pond was even hotter! The Oyunumagawa river was another highlight, with its warm water flowing through the forest. I even got to enjoy a natural foot bath along the way. The autumn colors were stunning, making the whole area even more beautiful. Highly recommend visiting for anyone who loves nature and unique landscapes!
