Okayama Castle

1 of 7 in Okayama

Okayama Castle (岡山城, Okayamajō), affectionately known as “Crow Castle” (Ujō) due to its sleek black exterior, stands as a striking symbol of the city’s feudal past. Originally completed in 1597 by the powerful warlord Ukita Hideie, the castle reflected the opulence of the Azuchi–Momoyama period with its bold architecture and gilded golden roof tiles. Although the original keep was destroyed during World War II, it was meticulously reconstructed in 1966, preserving its distinctive appearance and historical ambiance. One original element, the Tsukimi Yagura (Moon-Viewing Turret) dating back to 1620, remains intact—offering a rare glimpse into Edo-period craftsmanship. Nestled along the scenic Asahi River and facing the renowned Korakuen Garden, the castle forms part of one of Japan’s most picturesque historic settings.

Inside the six-story donjon, visitors will find modern exhibits exploring the castle’s history, the lives of its feudal lords, and the turbulent era in which it was built. Interactive displays and period artifacts bring this narrative to life. A highlight for many is the chance to try Bizen-yaki pottery, a traditional ceramic craft native to the region, through a hands-on studio experience on the castle grounds. Seasonal events, kimono rentals, and panoramic views from the upper floors make Okayama Castle more than a historical monument—it’s an immersive cultural experience that bridges past and present in the heart of western Japan.
