Usui Pass Observation Platform

In Kyu Karuizawa district —
4 of 4 in Karuizawa

The Usui Pass Observation Platform (碓氷峠見晴台, Usui Tōge Miharashidai) is a scenic viewpoint perched on the border of Nagano and Gunma Prefectures, about 4 kilometers northeast of Kyu-Karuizawa. From this panoramic spot, visitors are treated to spectacular vistas—Mount Asama rises majestically on one side, while the sprawling landscapes of Gunma Prefecture stretch out on the other. Surrounded by lush forests and mountain air, the platform is a popular destination for photographers, hikers, and anyone looking to take in the region’s natural beauty in a peaceful setting.

Just a short walk away lies the Kumano Kotai Shrine, a spiritually significant site that also straddles the Gunma-Nagano border. The shrine complex includes three halls: the main hall (Hongu), uniquely built right on the border line, with the Nachi Hall in Nagano and the Shingu Hall in Gunma. This shrine is a branch of the revered Kumano Sanzan shrines in Wakayama and offers visitors a serene atmosphere steeped in history and spirituality. The combination of sweeping views and cultural heritage makes this area an excellent addition to any Karuizawa itinerary.
