Takayama Jinya (高山陣屋), located in the picturesque Hida Region, was once a key government office for the Tokugawa Shogunate. Built in 1692, this historic building served as the administrative headquarters for officials who were dispatched from Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to oversee the region. The Jinya remained in use until 1969 and is now open to the public as a museum. Its well-preserved tatami rooms offer a unique opportunity to step back in time and explore various spaces that were once bustling with official activity. Visitors can wander through former offices, conference rooms, guest areas, and living quarters. A standout feature is the interrogation room, which adds an intriguing historical touch to the experience.

Adjacent to the main building is a large traditional rice storehouse, dating back to the 1600s. Recognized as the largest of its kind in Japan, the storehouse houses a fascinating collection of exhibits related to the region’s rich past. Here, you can find old maps, documents, and various historical artifacts that shed light on the lives of local leaders and the governance of the area during the Tokugawa era. The exhibits provide a deeper understanding of the Hida Region’s significance in Japanese history, making Takayama Jinya a must-see destination for history enthusiasts.
