Sendai Tanabata Matsuri

Part of Sendai

The Sendai Tanabata Matsuri (仙台七夕まつり), held annually from August 6-8, is one of Japan’s most celebrated Tanabata festivals. As part of the Tohoku Sandai Matsuri, this iconic event transforms Sendai’s shopping arcades into a stunning spectacle, with vibrant streamers made from washi paper and bamboo adorning the streets. These handcrafted decorations are more than just festive decor; they represent heartfelt wishes for health, prosperity, and happiness, infusing the city with a magical atmosphere. The dazzling display creates a unique cultural experience for visitors, as the streets come alive with color and tradition.

In addition to the breathtaking decorations, festival-goers can indulge in a variety of food stalls at Kotodai Park's Shimin Hiroba Square. On August 5, the festival also features a magnificent fireworks display, lighting up the summer night sky. This blend of vibrant street life, culinary delights, and traditional celebration offers a perfect glimpse into Sendai's rich cultural heritage.
