The best way to visit the Oku-Iya Kazurabashi Bridges is by rental car. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Awa-Ikeda Station to Kubo (2 hours, ¥1,790, 4 buses/day), then transfer to another bus bound for Nijukazurabashi or Mount Tsurugi. Get off at the Nijukazurabashi bus stop (30 minutes, ¥430, 2 buses/day). Buses from Kubo to the bridges run only on weekends and during peak seasons from April to November, including Golden Week, summer holidays (mid-July to August), and the autumn foliage season (October to early November).

Oku-Iya Kazurabashi
Oku-Iya Kazurabashi (奥祖谷二重かずら橋, Oku-Iya Nijū Kazurabashi) is a captivating hidden gem deep within the remote Iya Valley. Tucked away in a forested gorge, this site features two historic vine suspension bridges standing side by side—a rare sight that recalls the era when 13 such bridges once connected the region. These crossings were essential for transporting people and goods across the rugged terrain. The larger of the two, known as the Husband Bridge (Otto no Hashi), stretches 44 meters across the river near a small waterfall, while the smaller Wife Bridge (Tsuma no Hashi), located just upstream, spans 22 meters. Though they retain their rustic appearance, both bridges are reinforced with hidden steel cables and are rebuilt every three years, offering visitors a thrilling yet safe experience as they sway above the flowing river, surrounded by untouched wilderness.
Just steps from the Wife Bridge lies a quirky and unforgettable feature—the Wild Monkey Bridge, a wooden cart suspended from a rope, once used by locals to ferry supplies across the river. Today, adventurous visitors can pull themselves across in the cart, enjoying a fun and nostalgic hands-on experience. Well-maintained hiking trails connect the bridges and lead to nearby camping areas, inviting guests to fully immerse themselves in the pristine natural beauty of the valley. For those seeking a blend of adventure, history, and solitude, Oku-Iya Kazurabashi offers one of Shikoku’s most memorable and scenic escapes.
