Oboke and Koboke Gorge
Oboke Gorge (大歩危, Ōboke) and its neighboring Koboke Gorge (小歩危) are dramatic, narrow canyons carved over millennia by the powerful Yoshino River at the gateway to the Iya Valley. Their names—meaning "big dangerous steps" and "small dangerous steps"—allude to the rugged, rocky terrain that shapes the landscape. Towering cliffs, emerald-green waters, and jagged rock formations make this area a striking natural wonder. A popular stop for travelers en route to the Iya Valley, the gorges offer a perfect blend of scenic beauty and outdoor adventure for both nature lovers and thrill-seekers.
Oboke Gorge is regarded as one of Japan’s premier destinations for river-based adventure, rivaling even Minakami in Gunma Prefecture. The Yoshino River is renowned for its exhilarating whitewater rafting, especially in spring and summer when snowmelt and seasonal rains create powerful rapids. For a more relaxed experience, traditional sightseeing boat cruises offer a tranquil way to take in the gorge’s dramatic scenery. Visitors can also enjoy canyoning, hiking, and exploring the region’s unique geology and nearby hot springs, making Oboke and Koboke Gorges a dynamic hub for both excitement and relaxation in the heart of Shikoku.
