Takamijima Island Travel Tips
Takamijima Island (高見島), nestled in the tranquil Seto Inland Sea, is a hidden gem within the Shiwaku Island Chain of western Kagawa Prefecture. Its name, meaning "high view island," perfectly captures the island’s rugged, mountainous landscape that rises dramatically from the sea. Once a bustling community, Takamijima now has fewer than 30 residents living in a quaint fishing village on the southeastern shore. Visitors are drawn to the island’s distinctive charm—terraced houses clinging to hillsides, traditional burial customs unique to the region, and breathtaking coastal panoramas that evoke the timeless charm of rural Japan. The island’s peaceful atmosphere offers a rare escape from the modern world, inviting travelers to slow down and soak in the quiet rhythms of island life.
Despite its small population, Takamijima becomes a vibrant cultural hub during the Setouchi Triennale art festival, which breathes new life into the island periodically. Throughout the event, contemporary art installations—ranging from striking sculptures to immersive outdoor exhibits—dot the landscape, creating a captivating dialogue between modern creativity and the island’s natural beauty. The historic Ura District, with its well-preserved Edo-period buildings and winding, narrow pathways, offers a fascinating window into Takamijima’s rich past. Though many homes stand empty, their weathered facades add a poignant beauty to the island’s scenery. For visitors seeking a blend of history, art, and serene nature, Takamijima presents a quietly compelling destination that rewards those willing to venture off the beaten path.
