Ibukijima Island Travel Tips

12 of 12 in Kagawa Prefecture

Ibukijima Island (伊吹島) is a small but culturally vibrant island just off the coast of Shikoku. It’s the westernmost inhabited island in Kagawa Prefecture and, despite its modest size—just one square kilometer—it plays an important role in Japan’s fishing industry, especially as a top producer of sardines and anchovies. From June to August, the island springs to life during peak fishing season, as the waterfront processing plants buzz with activity. Visitors can wander through the charming fishing village, where narrow lanes lead to hidden temples, the historic Ibuki Hachimangu Shrine, and scenic viewpoints overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. With its close-knit community and deep-rooted traditions, Ibukijima offers an authentic glimpse into a quieter, disappearing side of Japan.

But there’s more to Ibukijima than just fishing. The island is also part of the Setouchi Triennale, a contemporary art festival that has brought new life and creativity to the area. Several permanent art installations remain on the island, seamlessly blending into the natural surroundings and drawing visitors year-round. Still, signs of change are visible—abandoned homes and a closed school hint at the realities of population decline. For those willing to explore on foot, Ibukijima offers a compelling mix of maritime heritage, modern art, and peaceful island life, making it a meaningful stop for culturally curious travelers.
