Aso Travel Tips

3 of 5 in Kumamoto Prefecture

Aso City (阿蘇市), nestled in the heart of Kumamoto Prefecture, is a breathtaking destination celebrated for its dramatic natural scenery and thrilling outdoor adventures. The city is best known for the majestic Aso Caldera—one of the world’s largest volcanic craters—and the imposing, still-active Mount Nakadake, where you can witness billowing plumes of volcanic smoke. Nature enthusiasts can explore an extensive network of hiking trails that weave through lush grasslands and ancient forests, or take in sweeping views from horseback or even a hot air balloon, offering a unique perspective of Aso’s vast and varied landscape.

Beyond its awe-inspiring outdoors, Aso City invites visitors to experience the warmth of rural Japanese culture. Local farms open their doors to guests for hands-on agricultural experiences, while charming ryokan inns offer traditional hospitality and soothing onsen hot springs. The region’s cuisine is another highlight, with hearty dishes crafted from fresh, locally grown produce and regional specialties like Akaushi beef. Whether you’re seeking adventure in the great outdoors or peaceful moments in a serene countryside setting, Aso City promises an unforgettable blend of excitement and relaxation.

Getting around

In Aso, the best way to get around is by rental car. While buses and trains do reach most attractions, they don’t run frequently. With a car, you have more freedom and can explore at your own pace. The widest selection of rental cars can be found in Kumamoto City or at Kumamoto Airport, but there are only a few options in the Aso area itself.

The main transport hub is Aso Station on the JR Hohi Line, which connects Kumamoto and Oita. From Aso Station, you can take a bus to the top of Mount Aso. The Minami Aso Railway is mainly useful if you plan to visit Takachiho, as there is a bus from around Takamori Station to that area.
