In Aso, the best way to get around is by rental car. While buses and trains do reach most attractions, they don’t run often. With a car, you have more freedom and can explore at your own pace. You’ll find the most rental car options in Kumamoto City or at Kumamoto Airport, but there are only a few in the Aso area itself.
The main transport hub is Aso Station on the JR Hohi Line, which connects Kumamoto and Oita. From Aso Station, you can take a bus to the top of Mount Aso. The Minami Aso Railway is mainly useful if you plan to go to Takachiho, as there's a bus from around Takamori Station to that area.
