Tanaka Isson Memorial Art Museum
The Tanaka Isson Memorial Museum of Art (田中一村記念美術館, Tanaka Isson Kinen Bijutsukan) is a cultural gem located in the northeastern part of Amami Oshima, just a short distance from the airport. Situated within Amami Park, the museum celebrates the life and work of Tanaka Isson, a renowned Japanese painter who spent his later years on the island. The museum showcases a rich collection of his works, which often focus on the island’s natural beauty, including vivid depictions of local flora, birds, and the island's unique landscape. The exhibitions include both permanent collections and rotating temporary displays, offering a comprehensive look at Isson’s legacy and his artistic evolution.
Visitors to the museum can explore five distinct rooms, each dedicated to a different phase of Isson’s life and career. One room is devoted to his early works from Tochigi Prefecture and Chiba Prefecture, while another highlights his later works created during his difficult years on Amami Oshima. The museum also offers additional attractions within Amami Park, including the Amami no Sato Folk Museum, where you can explore the island's traditional culture, and a free observation deck that provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, making it a perfect spot for visitors to enjoy the island’s natural beauty.
