Tanaka Isson Memorial Art Museum
Tanaka Isson Memorial Museum of Art (田中一村記念美術館, Tanaka Isson Kinen Bijutsukan) is a must-see at Amami Park, located in the northeast corner of Amami Oshima, just a short distance from the airport. This museum honors the life and work of Tanaka Isson, a renowned painter who lived on the island during his later years. The museum features a blend of permanent and temporary exhibitions, displaying Isson’s stunning depictions of local flora and birds, along with works by other artists connected to the island.
The museum’s exhibits are spread across five rooms, each dedicated to a different period of Isson's life. One hall features his early works from Tochigi Prefecture and Chiba Prefecture, while another focuses on the art he created during his impoverished time on Amami Oshima. Amami Park also offers other attractions, such as the Amami no Sato folk museum and a free observation deck with stunning views of the surrounding area.
