Taiyuin (大猷院, Taiyūin) is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun of the Tokugawa dynasty and the grandson of Ieyasu Tokugawa. Unlike the grand Toshogu Shrine, which honors his grandfather, Taiyuin was constructed in a more modest style out of respect for Iemitsu’s legacy. It combines both Buddhist and Shinto architectural elements, a characteristic feature of the period before the Meiji Restoration. While Toshogu was elevated to a shrine status, Taiyuin was designated as a subtemple of the nearby Rinnoji Temple, emphasizing its spiritual connection to Buddhism.

Visitors to Taiyuin can marvel at its impressive gates, including the vermillion Niomon Gate, which guards the entrance, and the ornately designed Nitenmon Gate, both of which showcase intricate craftsmanship. Inside the mausoleum complex, the Haiden, or worship hall, offers a stunning interior with detailed carvings and gilded decorations that reflect the grandeur of the Tokugawa era. The most remarkable feature is Iemitsu's mausoleum itself, which exudes a sense of dignity and reverence, providing a peaceful yet awe-inspiring atmosphere for visitors.
