Jomyoji Temple
Jomyoji Temple (浄妙寺) is a serene Zen temple located in the hills of eastern Kamakura, ranked as the fifth of the city's great Zen temples. Founded by the influential Ashikaga family, the temple once featured seven buildings and several pagodas, though many were lost to fire over the centuries. Today, only the main hall, reception hall, main gate, and warehouse remain. The temple's main hall houses a statue of Shaka Nyorai, the historical Buddha, and is surrounded by a peaceful garden.
Visitors can also enjoy a cup of tea in the restored teahouse, overlooking a dry garden. Behind the main hall is a spacious cemetery, while a path leads to a small Western-style restaurant with beautiful views over Kamakura. Jomyoji Temple offers a perfect blend of history, tranquility, and scenic beauty.
