Jomyoji Temple (浄妙寺), located in the peaceful hills of eastern Kamakura, is one of the city’s esteemed Zen temples, ranking fifth among Kamakura’s great Zen temples. Founded by the influential Ashikaga family, Jomyoji once boasted an impressive array of seven buildings and pagodas, though many were lost to fire throughout its long history. Today, the temple’s main hall, reception hall, main gate, and warehouse remain as a testament to its past. The main hall is home to a revered statue of Shaka Nyorai, the historical Buddha, and is surrounded by a serene garden, offering visitors a tranquil setting to reflect on the temple’s rich spiritual heritage.
In addition to its historical significance, Jomyoji Temple provides a peaceful escape with its inviting tea house, where visitors can enjoy a cup of tea while overlooking a carefully curated dry garden. Behind the main hall lies a spacious cemetery, offering a quiet space for contemplation. A scenic path leads visitors to a charming Western-style restaurant with stunning views of Kamakura. With its harmonious blend of history, tranquility, and beautiful landscapes, Jomyoji Temple provides an enriching experience for those seeking both cultural insight and natural beauty.
