Hachimangu Shrine (Tsurugaoka Hachimangu)

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu (鶴岡八幡宮, Tsurugaoka Hachimangū), Kamakura's most significant and revered shrine, was originally founded in 1063 by Minamoto Yoriyoshi and later relocated to its present location by his son, Minamoto Yoritomo, in 1180. This grand shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the patron god of the Minamoto clan and the samurai, and enshrines the spirits of Emperor Ojin, Hime-gami, and Empress Jingu. Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is not only a spiritual center but also a symbol of the Minamoto family's power and influence during Japan’s feudal era.

Visitors approach the shrine via a long, wide path lined with traditional torii gates, leading them to the main hall situated atop a grand stairway. The hall houses a small museum displaying historical treasures related to the shrine’s rich past.
