Nagahama Hikiyama Museum
Nagahama Hikiyama Museum (曳山博物館) invites visitors into the world of the Nagahama Hikiyama Festival, allowing its artistry to be experienced throughout the year. The museum houses several of the festival’s magnificent hikiyama floats—towering mobile stages standing 6 to 9 meters tall and weighing up to 6 metric tons. Their elaborate craftsmanship is immediately striking, with gold leaf detailing, lacquered panels, carved woodwork, and finely worked metal fittings that reflect centuries of skilled artistry. Through glass-walled display bays, guests can observe the floats up close, while certified regional interpreters share insights into their construction, symbolism, and the neighborhoods that maintain them. Interactive displays and historical context help illustrate how the festival evolved as part of Nagahama’s castle-town identity.
On the second floor, visitors can explore the cultural traditions that animate the floats during the annual April festivities. Video recordings show the dynamic kabuki performances enacted by young actors, a cherished practice passed down through family and community. Photographs and textile displays highlight the embroidered curtains and stage décor used on each hikiyama, emphasizing the pride and craftsmanship embedded in every detail. The museum also provides a deeper understanding of how teams of roughly forty people maneuver these grand structures through Nagahama’s narrow streets during the festival, creating a shared experience of effort, celebration, and artistry.
