Mount Omine (大峯山, Ominesan) is a captivating destination that attracts climbers, trekkers, and pilgrims alike. The mountain is famous for its challenging Omine-Okugake Trail, which stretches from Mount Yoshino to the Kumano shrines in Wakayama. This iconic 170 km trek, typically completed in five days, offers hikers stunning views of surrounding mountain ranges, such as Inamura-gadake and Dainichi-yama. The summit, standing at 1,719 meters, offers a strenuous yet rewarding climb with breathtaking panoramic vistas. Along the route, visitors can immerse themselves in the serene beauty of nature, including a visit to the ancient Ryusenji Temple, renowned for its spectacular autumn foliage.

Ominesan is easily accessible by train, with direct connections from Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara to Mount Yoshino via Kintetsu trains. After an intense trek, Dorogawa Onsen, a charming hot spring village nearby, provides the perfect retreat. Visitors can relax in scenic ryokan inns, soaking in rejuvenating hot springs. A visit to the Ominesanji Temple offers insight into the Shugendo traditions, though it’s important to note that women are restricted from entering this sacred space. The Omine-Okugake Trail not only presents a physical challenge but also serves as a spiritual pilgrimage for those seeking a deeper connection to Japan's sacred mountains.
