Wakakusa Yamayaki Festival
The Wakakusa Yamayaki Festival (若草山の山焼き) is a dramatic annual event in Nara, during which the grassy slopes of Mount Wakakusayama are set ablaze in a stunning fire display visible throughout the city. Held at the eastern edge of Nara Park, the festival begins with a ceremonial procession at 5:00 PM, followed by a vibrant fireworks show at 6:15 PM. Shortly after, the hillside is ignited, burning brightly for 30 to 60 minutes. Believed to date back centuries, the origins of this fiery tradition are linked to historic boundary disputes or intended as a method to drive away wild boars.
The event is deeply rooted in local culture, with participation from Todaiji Temple, Kofukuji Temple, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Earlier in the day, visitors can enjoy lighthearted festivities such as a senbei (rice cracker) throwing contest. Held annually on the fourth Saturday of January, the festival attracts large crowds, though it may be canceled or postponed due to inclement weather. Popular viewing locations include Nara Park and the historic site of the former Heijo Palace, offering excellent vantage points for this spectacular winter tradition.
