Harushika Sake Brewery

23 of 23 in Nara

Harushika Sake Brewery (今西清兵衛商店) is a historic sake brewery in Nara, founded over 130 years ago by the Imanishi family. Nestled beside the family’s former residence, the brewery is steeped in tradition and continues to preserve time-honored sake-making methods passed down through generations. The name Harushika, meaning “spring deer,” is a poetic nod to Nara’s natural beauty and its famous freely roaming deer. Visitors can enjoy a tasting experience featuring five carefully selected varieties of Harushika sake for just 700 yen, each offering a distinct flavor ranging from crisp and dry to rich and aromatic.

Open only from October to March, Harushika offers a seasonal, intimate setting—perfect for those exploring Nara during the cooler months. Beyond tastings, guests have the opportunity to learn about the ingredients, brewing techniques, and the cultural significance of sake in Japanese rituals and daily life. The serene atmosphere, combined with the warmth of traditional hospitality, makes Harushika not just a place to sample sake, but a window into Nara’s living heritage. Whether you're a connoisseur or a curious traveler, a visit to Harushika offers a memorable encounter with one of Japan’s most cherished crafts.
