Manyo Bunkakan
The Complex of Manyo Culture (万葉文化館, Manyō Bunkakan) is a spacious and thoughtfully designed museum located in Asuka, dedicated to celebrating the Manyoshu, Japan’s oldest and most revered poetry collection. The Manyoshu, composed mainly during the Asuka Period (538–710), is a collection of poems that capture the beauty of early Japan, often referencing iconic landmarks such as the Yamato mountains. The museum stands on the site of Japan’s first known mint, where visitors can explore ancient remains and coins on display, adding a historical layer to the experience.
The museum is home to two main exhibition halls. One focuses on modern artwork inspired by the Manyoshu, offering a contemporary interpretation of its themes, while the other provides an immersive experience with life-size models, a theater, and dramatic exhibits. Additionally, the museum features a reading room, a special exhibit area, a gift shop, and a cozy café where visitors can relax and reflect. It’s a perfect destination for those interested in experiencing a blend of art, literature, and history in a single, enriching space.
