Kodaiji Temple
Kodaiji (高台寺, Kōdaiji), located in Kyoto's scenic Higashiyama District, is a remarkable Zen Buddhist temple with deep historical roots. Founded in 1606 by Nene, the widow of the powerful warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the temple was built to honor his memory with the support of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Kodaiji’s elegant architecture reflects the lavish aesthetic of the Momoyama period, showcasing richly decorated interiors, lacquerwork, and gold leaf embellishments. The surrounding temple grounds offer visitors a peaceful escape, highlighted by two distinct gardens: a classic rock garden that emphasizes Zen simplicity, and a tsukiyama-style stroll garden featuring a reflective pond, artfully arranged stones, and sculpted hills that are especially captivating in autumn’s vibrant colors.
Beyond the main structures, visitors can explore several important cultural sites within the temple complex. Behind the temple lie the mausoleums of Hideyoshi and Nene, preserved in their original settings. Traditional tea houses, designed by the famed tea master Sen no Rikyu, offer a glimpse into Japan’s refined tea culture. From Kodaiji, the charming Nene’s Path leads visitors along a scenic walkway lined with shops, cafes, and traditional townhouses, eventually reaching the Kodaiji Sho Museum, which displays valuable artifacts related to the temple’s history. The combination of historical significance, exquisite design, and tranquil atmosphere makes Kodaiji a must-visit destination in Kyoto.
