Yamazaki Whisky Museum

50 of 75 in Kyoto

The Suntory Yamazaki Distillery (サントリー山崎蒸留所, Santorī Yamazaki Jōryūsho), established in 1923, holds the distinction of being Japan's first whisky distillery. Nestled at the foot of Mount Tennozan near Kyoto, the site was carefully chosen for its exceptional water quality, ideal climate, and rich natural surroundings, all of which contribute to the unique character of Yamazaki whisky. Over the years, the distillery has become world-renowned, producing a variety of award-winning single malts praised for their complex flavors and craftsmanship. Visitors can embark on guided tours offering a comprehensive look at the whisky-making process — from the careful selection of malted barley and the intricacies of fermentation and distillation, to the delicate art of aging whisky in various types of casks, each imparting its own distinct notes.

Adjacent to the distillery is the Yamazaki Whisky Museum, which offers an even deeper exploration of Suntory’s rich history and its pioneering role in Japanese whisky production. Exhibits showcase vintage equipment, historical documents, and an impressive library of whisky bottles from around the world. The standard tour typically lasts up to two hours and concludes with a guided tasting session, allowing visitors to sample several expressions of Yamazaki and appreciate their subtle differences. Advance reservations are required due to limited capacity, and guests are encouraged to spend additional time in the museum either before or after their scheduled visit to fully absorb the legacy and meticulous artistry that define Yamazaki whisky.
