Kyoto Aquarium is a 15-minute walk west of Kyoto Station, or a 5-minute walk from Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station (a 3-minute train ride from Kyoto Station, costing 150 yen).

Kyoto Aquarium
The Kyoto Aquarium (京都水族館, Kyōto Suizokukan), located within Umekoji Park just a short distance from Kyoto Station, opened its doors in 2012 as the city’s first major aquarium. Although more compact than Japan's larger coastal aquariums, Kyoto Aquarium offers a thoughtfully designed and immersive experience spread across two levels. Its modern exhibits showcase a rich variety of marine and freshwater species from both Japan and around the world. Visitors can explore multiple themed zones featuring creatures such as colorful tropical fish, mesmerizing jellyfish, playful African penguins, harbor seals, and bottlenose dolphins that perform in daily shows, blending entertainment with education. The architecture and layout utilize advanced aquarium technology, including an artificial seawater system that allows the facility to operate independently of ocean water sources — a rare feature for an inland aquarium.
One of the aquarium’s signature highlights is its "Kyoto River" zone, which recreates the natural habitat of the Kamo River and other waterways flowing through the Kyoto region. This area is home to the endangered Japanese giant salamander, one of the world’s largest amphibians and a symbol of local conservation efforts. The Kyoto Aquarium actively participates in breeding programs and research to protect regional aquatic species and raise public awareness about environmental preservation. Additional zones introduce visitors to creatures from various marine ecosystems, including deep-sea life, coastal environments, and wetlands. With its family-friendly atmosphere, interactive educational displays, and seasonal events, Kyoto Aquarium offers an engaging blend of entertainment, science, and local culture, making it a popular destination for both tourists and residents alike.
