Kyoto Railway Museum
Kyoto Railway Museum (京都鉄道博物館, Kyōto Tetsudō Hakubutsukan) offers a fun and educational experience for train lovers of all ages. Spread over three floors and 30,000 square meters, the museum features more than 50 real trains, from classic steam locomotives to modern shinkansen. You can even walk under a retired freight train, try hands-on exhibits like driving a simulator, or watch model trains in one of Japan's largest railway dioramas. Kids and adults alike enjoy the train conductor experience, while the second-floor restaurant and observation deck provide great views of real trains passing by.
Right next to the main building is a rare 1914 roundhouse with Japan’s biggest collection of steam locomotives. Watch real-time maintenance work through windows or ride a real steam train for just 300 yen. The museum exit features the charming Nijo Station Building, built in 1904 and moved here in 1997. It's Japan’s oldest wooden station building and a beautiful reminder of early railway history.
