Kobe Festival (Kobe Matsuri)
The Kobe Festival (神戸祭) is one of Kobe’s most energetic and internationally celebrated events, filling the city with color, music, and dance every spring. Held over two days, the festival offers something for everyone, from lively stage performances and open-air concerts to bustling street markets and rows of food stalls serving Kobe’s best-loved delicacies. The highlight is the grand parade on the second day, where more than 70 groups—some with up to 200 participants—march through the streets in dazzling costumes, complete with floats, live music, and energetic dance. Crowds line the parade route, creating a festive atmosphere that fills the city.
First held in 1971, the Kobe Festival has grown into a beloved tradition that symbolizes the city’s spirit of openness and international exchange. The main parade usually takes place on the third Sunday of May, attracting both locals and travelers who come to share in the celebration. Among the many participants, the Copa Samba team stands out year after year, captivating audiences with flamboyant costumes and rhythmic performances inspired by Brazilian carnival. Their energy and flair make them a favorite of photographers and spectators alike, creating unforgettable moments along the parade route.
