Onsenji Temple

3 of 13 in Kinosaki

Onsenji Temple (温泉寺), nestled at the western edge of Kinosaki Onsen, is a serene sanctuary with deep historical significance. The temple is dedicated to a revered Buddhist saint who is said to have prayed for 1,000 days to bring the healing spring waters to the town. This sacred site was once a prerequisite for visitors to stop by before enjoying any of the local baths, although this tradition has faded over time. Today, Onsenji Temple continues to attract travelers seeking a peaceful retreat and a glimpse into the rich history of Kinosaki Onsen.

One of the temple’s most striking features is the eleven-headed Kannon Buddha, a rare and awe-inspiring sculpture that is only fully displayed to the public every 33 years. The next full exhibition will take place in 2054, though partial viewings are offered during the annual Kinosaki Onsen Festival, held on April 23rd and 24th. Nearby, the Onsenji Treasure Museum offers an additional cultural layer to the visit, featuring a collection of historic artifacts and treasures related to the temple’s past, providing further insight into the area's spiritual and cultural heritage.
