Xavier Church
The Xavier Church (サビエル記念聖堂, Sabieru Kinen Seidō) in Yamaguchi is a landmark dedicated to Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier, who played a pivotal role in spreading Christianity across Asia in the 1500s. Xavier arrived in Japan in 1549 and made an important stop in Yamaguchi in 1550 during his journey from Kagoshima to Kyoto. Yamaguchi became one of his key locations, with his presence here contributing to the city's historical connection with early Christian missions in Japan. The church stands as a tribute to his influence in the region and his missionary work.
Constructed in 1952, the church tragically burned down in 1991, but was faithfully reconstructed in 1998. The modern structure boasts a beautifully designed interior that reflects the spirit of the era while blending contemporary elements. On the first floor, visitors can explore a museum dedicated to Francis Xavier’s journey, showcasing Christian art, statues, traditional clothing, and historical maps illustrating his travels throughout Japan. The church is a key destination for those interested in Japan's early Christian history, offering a deep dive into the cultural and religious exchanges between Japan and the West during the 16th century.
