Former Castle Town
Hagi’s former castle town district (萩城城下町) in Yamaguchi Prefecture offers a captivating journey into Japan’s Edo-period past, preserving the legacy of the powerful Mori Clan. As the heart of their feudal rule, the district maintains its original layout, with streets that have been carefully preserved for centuries. White-walled samurai residences, along with traditional merchant quarters, line the streets, offering visitors a glimpse into the town’s historical charm. While Hagi Castle now lies in ruins, the district remains a cultural gem, with its architecture standing as a testament to the region’s rich past.
Much of the former castle town's original design has survived, having avoided major disasters over the centuries. Visitors can explore beautifully restored samurai mansions, delve into local history at historical museums, and admire ancient temples that are still open to the public. Walking through the tranquil, picturesque streets, guests can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the Edo period, experiencing firsthand the environment where samurai and merchants once lived and worked.
