Former Castle Town
Hagi’s former castle town (萩城城下町) district in Yamaguchi Prefecture offers a captivating journey into Japan’s Edo-period past. Once the heart of the powerful Mori Clan, the area preserves its original town layout with beautifully maintained streets. White-walled samurai residences and merchant quarters line the district, reflecting the town’s feudal-era charm. Although Hagi Castle is now in ruins, the district remains a cultural treasure.
Having avoided major disasters, much of the former castle town’s architecture and design have survived. Visitors can explore restored samurai mansions, historical museums, and ancient temples open to the public. Walking through these quiet, picturesque streets provides a rare glimpse into the daily lives of samurai and merchants during the Edo Period.
