The old town is located southeast of Tsuwano Station, just a 10-minute walk to the Tonomachi district.

Tsuwano Old Town
Tsuwano Old Town (殿町, Tonomachi), often referred to as "Small Kyoto," is a picturesque area that offers a captivating glimpse into Japan's past. The town is renowned for its well-preserved historical buildings, with the Tonomachi district at the heart of this charming setting. As visitors wander through this beautifully maintained part of the former samurai district, they’ll encounter traditional earthen walls, classic wooden buildings, and a peaceful canal teeming with colorful koi carp. The district’s serene atmosphere, enhanced by the surrounding natural beauty, transports visitors to a bygone era where time seems to slow down.
Not far from Tonomachi is the former merchant district, located between Tsuwano Station and the Old Town. While this area is not as meticulously preserved, it still offers a fascinating look into Tsuwano’s rich history. The district retains its old-fashioned charm, with traditional buildings, quaint storefronts, and historic sake shops lining the streets. Several museums scattered throughout the area provide deeper insight into the town’s cultural heritage, making it a delightful destination for history and culture enthusiasts. Though less polished, this district has a unique, relaxed vibe, offering a more authentic and less touristy experience.
