From Tsuwano Station, it’s a 30-minute walk to the lower station of the chair lift. The chair lift ride takes five minutes to reach the top, followed by a 15–20 minute hike to the castle ruins. Alternatively, you can skip the chair lift and take a 20-minute hike through the woods.

Tsuwano Castle Ruins
The Tsuwano Castle Ruins (津和野城跡) sit high atop a mountain ridge, 200 meters above the picturesque town of Tsuwano. Originally built in the 12th century, the castle was expanded in the 1600s with the addition of formidable stone walls. Despite its grandeur, the main keep was tragically struck by lightning and destroyed in 1686, never to be rebuilt. Today, the ruins consist primarily of the stone foundations, offering visitors a glimpse into the castle's rich history and the strategic importance it once held.
To reach the ruins, visitors can take a scenic chair lift followed by a 15–20 minute hike through lush woods. The castle grounds, now covered in grass, are home to the remnants of the once-imposing stone walls. From this vantage point, visitors are treated to sweeping panoramic views of Tsuwano below, with its traditional buildings and natural beauty. The combination of historical significance and breathtaking scenery makes the journey to the Tsuwano Castle Ruins an unforgettable experience for both history buffs and nature lovers alike.
