Fukiya Village

6 of 10 in Bitchu-Takahashi

Fukiya Village (吹屋) is a quaint, secluded district tucked away in the hills of Takahashi City, just 15 kilometers west of the city center. Once a prosperous community, Fukiya thrived due to its rich copper mines and the production of bengara, a distinctive red iron oxide pigment used in various industries, including painting and dyeing. At the height of its success, the village was a bustling hub for both the mining industry and artisans crafting bengara. However, by the 1920s, the copper industry declined, and the demand for bengara diminished, leading to a downturn in the village’s economy. Despite this, the distinctive red hue of bengara remains visible on many of the village's houses, where it was used not only for protection but also as a decorative feature, adding a unique charm to the town's architecture.

Although the village’s economy has evolved, Fukiya continues to captivate visitors with its rich historical significance and stunning scenery. The village is home to several notable landmarks, including traditional merchant houses and historical buildings that reflect its prosperous past. To make the most of your visit, Fukiya offers a convenient combination ticket for just 1000 yen, granting access to all the major attractions. Visitors can explore a variety of sites, from the beautifully preserved architecture to the scenic landscapes that surround the village. Fukiya offers a peaceful retreat into Japan's rural heritage, allowing tourists to experience the charm of a bygone era while immersing themselves in the village’s serene atmosphere.
