Hiroshima Downtown

3 of 10 in Hiroshima

Hiroshima’s vibrant downtown pulse is centered around Hondori Street, a bustling pedestrian-only arcade that stretches for about half a kilometer from the historic Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. This lively thoroughfare is lined with an eclectic mix of shops, trendy boutiques, cozy cafes, and inviting restaurants, offering visitors a dynamic urban experience infused with local culture. Just a short stroll away, Aioidori Avenue runs parallel to Hondori, where cars and trams pass through the city’s energetic traffic flow. Along this avenue, several large department stores and shopping complexes provide even more retail variety, making the area a true shopper’s paradise.

For those eager to savor Hiroshima’s culinary delights, Okonomimura is a must-visit destination situated just south of Hondori’s eastern end. Known as a dedicated food village, Okonomimura houses numerous small eateries specializing in Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, a savory pancake layered with noodles, seafood, and vegetables. The vibrant atmosphere, with expert chefs preparing dishes right before your eyes, captures the essence of Hiroshima’s food culture. Together, Hondori Street and Okonomimura offer an immersive blend of shopping, dining, and cultural exploration in the heart of the city.
