Matsuri no Mori
Matsuri no Mori (まつりの森 ミュージアム), located just outside Takayama’s city center, is a captivating museum dedicated to the iconic Takayama Festival. Recognized as one of Japan’s three most beautiful festivals, alongside Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri and the Chichibu Yomatsuri, the Takayama Festival is celebrated every spring and autumn. At Matsuri no Mori, visitors are introduced to the rich history and cultural significance of this grand event, immersing themselves in the vibrant traditions that make the festival so renowned.
Upon entering the museum, visitors first pass through a 50-meter hallway, setting the tone for the main underground exhibition space with its cave-like atmosphere. The hallway displays eleven miniature festival floats, each about a third the size of the actual ones used during the autumn festival. Additionally, golden-lacquered folding screens depict famous floats from other cities, including those from Kyoto. The main exhibition area houses life-sized replica floats and karakuri dolls—mechanical puppets that play a central role in the Takayama Festival. Visitors can enjoy live demonstrations showcasing these intricate dolls in action, providing a fascinating glimpse into the artistry and craftsmanship behind one of Japan’s most celebrated festivals.
