Tokugawa Art Museum
The Tokugawa Art Museum (徳川美術館, Tokugawa Bijutsukan) in Nagoya showcases the rich history of the Owari Tokugawa family, one of the three major branches of the Tokugawa clan during Japan's Edo Period (1603-1868). Located on the site of the family’s former residence, the museum boasts an impressive collection of samurai armor, swords, tea utensils, noh masks, costumes, and historical scrolls and maps. These artifacts provide a fascinating window into the feudal era, allowing visitors to explore Japan’s warrior culture and the legacy of the Tokugawa family.
Adjacent to the museum is Tokugawa-en, a serene Japanese garden that was once part of the Owari Tokugawa lords' retirement residence. This beautifully restored garden, reopened to the public in 2004, features a large pond and peaceful walking paths. It is especially breathtaking during spring and autumn, when the Peony and Iris gardens are in full bloom, creating a stunning natural landscape that complements the museum’s historical offerings.
