Meiji Mura (明治村, meaning "Meiji Village") is one of Japan's premier open-air museums, offering an immersive journey through Japan’s Meiji Period (1868-1912). Located in Inuyama, just an hour outside of Nagoya, the museum sits in a picturesque wooded area near Iruka Pond. The Meiji period was a transformative time for Japan, marking its shift from a feudal society to a modernized nation. As such, the architecture of the era reflects a blend of traditional Japanese design and Western influences, which visitors can experience firsthand through the more than 60 historical buildings on display. The vast museum grounds offer ample space for exploration, allowing visitors to spend half a day discovering the rich cultural and historical legacy of this pivotal period.

Among the museum’s impressive collection are iconic structures such as the entrance hall of Tokyo’s old Imperial Hotel and St. Francis Xavier’s Cathedral in Kyoto. Other notable buildings include the former Kanazawa Prison, a Sapporo telephone exchange, and various schools, hospitals, and breweries, each offering a fascinating glimpse into Japan’s modernization. For a truly immersive experience, visitors can take a ride on a vintage tram or steam locomotive, or even rent period-specific Meiji outfits. The museum also provides an array of recreational activities, with cafes, candy stores, and traditional game stalls offering a chance to relax and enjoy the unique historical atmosphere. Meiji Mura offers a vivid snapshot of Japan’s transformation during one of its most dynamic eras.
