Chikurin-ji Temple
Chikurinji Temple (竹林寺), nestled on the forested slopes of Mount Godaisan, is the 31st temple on the renowned Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage and serves as a spiritual cornerstone of Kochi. Founded in the early 8th century, it is believed to have been established either by the monk Gyoki or by visiting Chinese Buddhist priests, reflecting deep international and scholarly roots. Over time, Chikurinji has earned a reputation not only as a sacred site for pilgrims but also as a center of Buddhist learning, attracting students, scholars, and seekers from across Japan. Its location offers a peaceful retreat overlooking Kochi City, blending religious devotion with natural beauty.
The temple grounds are home to a striking five-story pagoda and several historic buildings that convey centuries of spiritual and architectural heritage. Visitors can stroll through the tranquil precincts and explore the treasure hall (Homotsuden), which houses a valuable collection of Buddhist statues, scriptures, and ritual objects. For a more intimate encounter, guests can enter the hondō (main hall) for a small fee, where they’ll find a serene interior space used for prayer and a beautifully landscaped garden designed for quiet reflection. Whether you're on a pilgrimage or simply seeking peace and insight, Chikurinji Temple offers a rich blend of cultural depth, sacred atmosphere, and scenic calm.
