Garyu Sanso Villa
Garyu Sanso is a riverside villa located just east of Ozu’s historic old town, built in 1907 as a private retreat for a wealthy local merchant. Designed over ten years and crafted by more than 9,000 artisans, the villa showcases the grace of imperial architecture, drawing inspiration from Kyoto’s Katsura Rikyu. At its core is Garyu-in, a thatched-roof wooden residence that combines understated luxury with artistic craftsmanship. The rooms feature coffered ceilings, intricately carved wooden transoms (ranma), and poetic details, such as a circular window symbolizing the full moon amidst drifting clouds.
Behind the main house lies a peaceful, moss-covered garden with stepping stones and Chishi-an, a teahouse originally converted from the villa’s bathhouse. Nearby, Furo-an—suspended above the Hijikawa River on stilts—boasts a gently curved ceiling that reflects the moonlight on the water, offering one of the most picturesque views in Ozu. The villa’s true beauty lies in its harmony between architecture and nature, where every structure and garden element is thoughtfully placed. While nighttime visits are not permitted, the villa’s serene ambiance can be enjoyed during the day, with seasonal tea services occasionally enhancing the experience. Furo-an, with its rustic charm and scenic location, is a favorite among photographers and artists. The entire complex embodies wabi-sabi—an appreciation for the beauty found in imperfection and the fleeting nature of life—making it a captivating destination for those seeking a deeper connection to Japanese aesthetics, seasonal beauty, and timeless craftsmanship.
