Oita Prefectural Art Museum (OPAM)
The Oita Prefectural Art Museum (大分県立美術館, bekend als OPAM) is a standout cultural destination located in the heart of Oita City. Opened in 2015, this contemporary museum was designed by the acclaimed architect Ban Shigeru, whose innovative use of a wooden facade inspired by woven bamboo and expansive glass walls creates a seamless transition between the museum’s indoor galleries and the surrounding cityscape. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a spacious, light-filled atrium featuring striking art installations and a well-stocked museum shop, instantly setting a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.
The main exhibition spaces are housed on the third floor, accessible via an impressive entryway highlighted by a graceful, curved wooden ceiling. OPAM offers a diverse range of artistic experiences, with galleries dedicated to traditional Japanese paintings, modern sculptures, poetry, and even performance art. The permanent collection places a special focus on artists connected to Oita, such as Edo-period master Tanomura Chikuden and celebrated 20th-century painters Fukuda Heihachiro and Takayama Tasuo, giving visitors an in-depth look at the region’s artistic heritage. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or a casual visitor, OPAM promises an inspiring journey through both local and international creativity.
