Takachiho Gorge

Highly Recommended
1 of 1 in Takachiho

Takachiho Gorge (高千穂峡, Takachiho-kyō) is a breathtaking natural wonder in Japan, carved by the Gokase River as it flows through layers of volcanic rock. The gorge is lined with towering basalt columns that resemble dragon scales, and it features the striking Minainotaki Waterfall, which plunges 17 meters into the river below. Visitors can experience the gorge from two unique perspectives: rowing a boat along the calm waters for an up-close view of the cliffs and waterfall—an experience that comes highly recommended—or walking the paved path along the edge of the gorge, offering spectacular views from above.

At the southern end of the gorge, you’ll find additional attractions such as a freshwater aquarium, fishing pond, restaurants, and souvenir shops. In summer, the gorge is beautifully illuminated until 22:00, creating a magical nighttime atmosphere. With its combination of natural beauty and outdoor activities, Takachiho Gorge is truly a must-visit destination in Japan.
