Yunotsuru Onsen
Yunotsuru Onsen (湯の鶴温泉) is a tranquil hot spring village hidden in the forested mountains near Minamata City. Nestled along a narrow, peaceful river, the town stretches only a few hundred meters, giving it a cozy and secluded charm. Its rustic atmosphere and unhurried pace make it an ideal destination for travelers seeking an authentic onsen experience. With just a handful of traditional ryokan lining the riverbanks, visitors can stay overnight to fully immerse themselves in the serene surroundings or drop by during the day to enjoy the healing baths for a modest fee of around 300 to 500 yen.
Local folklore tells of an injured crane that discovered the spring waters while trying to heal its wounds—a tale that gives the onsen its name, "Yunotsuru," meaning “hot water of the crane.” The legend lends a sense of timeless mystique to the area, where the mineral-rich waters are still celebrated for their restorative properties. Surrounded by lush nature, birdsong, and the gentle murmur of the river, Yunotsuru Onsen offers a soothing escape from modern life and a glimpse into the peaceful rhythm of traditional rural Japan.
